The goal of this session is to provide media selection skills for trainers and instructional designers. Participants will learn how to identify and classify learner outcomes, as well as examine the features of different media types to determine which one best supports the learner outcome. Photos, audio, animation and video are the focus of the media types discussed. Examples of the relationship between the learner outcome and media type are shown. Session activities will include working in teams to practice the media selection process and discussion of how this process can be used to select social media.

Interest Based Problem Solving

30 Jul 2013

Unlike traditional problem solving, where the parties begin with predetermined positions on issues, Interest Based Problem Solving opens with both parties first seeking to understand the issue or problem. Next, they identify the underlying interests of each side. Often, parties discover that their interests are mutual and that both sides are trying to achieve the same goal, but just taking different approaches.
The Principles of Interest-Based Problem Solving
Sharing relevant information is critical for effective solutions.
Focus on issues, not personalities.
Focus on the present and future, not the past.
Focus on the interests underlying the issues.
Focus on mutual interests, and helping to satisfy the other party’s interests as well as your own.
Options developed to satisfy those interests should be evaluated by objective criteria, rather than power or leverage.
We’ll review the 5-Step IBPS process, practice reframing problem statements into opportunities, and complete an exercise practicing IBPS.
